Frequently asked questions--

...About me...

Q:  Didn't you used to be :dev-patches-:?
A:  Yes.  I moved accounts in 2010.  I've actually been on DA since 2002.  I'm OLD.

Q:  YOU CHANGED ACCOUNTS!  WHY!?
A:  The name '-patches-' means little to me now a days and I'm just tired of using it. I don't care if people still refer to me as Patches, but I'd just prefer to move my art to an account with a name that doesn't associate with the name of a character I no longer draw.  Also I changed accounts around the beginning of 2010, so I decided it was time for a change and to put a new foot forward and continue to try and improve and create.

Q:  So I can still call you Patches?
A:  If you want!  I don't care.

Q:  How long have you been drawing?
A:  Ever since I could pick up a pencil.

Q:  Who taught you how to draw?
A:  Me!  Self-taught.

Q:  What do you use to color your digital works?
A: Photoshop most of the time.  Sometimes I use SAI.

Q:  What do you use to color your traditional works?
A:  I mostly use Micron or Copic multi-liners to ink my work and Copic Markers to color.

Q:  Where did you go to college?
A:  Grand Valley State University in Michigan.

Q:  What was your major?
A:  I'm a Film and Video major with an emphasis in Animation.  Graduated in 2005!

Q:  So Grand Valley is a good place for animation majors?
A:  It's alright.  It is not an art college.  The animation program is -very- small and I'm not even sure if they still have one!  I went to Grand Valley because it was the closest thing to my home that had an animation program and wasn't super expensive.

Q:  Do you have an art job?
A:  I used to work at a small studio that works primarily in Flash.  We design websites, make games, and animations for companies such as Disney, Nickelodeon,  Hasbro, HUB, etc.  All the stuff I did was featured online and is usually kid-based.  In 2013, I decided to take a break from industry work to be a stay-at-home Mom.

...Other stuff...

Q:  Can I use your characters to write stories/RolePlay/Make character's like them, etc?
A:  No.  I think you'll find it much more rewarding if you make up your own characters, ideas, and stories... So, please don't use mine or my ideas.  Getting inspiration from someone else's ideas is one thing... blatantly ripping them off is another without so much as asking is another.

Q:  Do you take requests?
A:  Nope.  Sorry.

Q:  Do you take commissions?
A:  Not very often anymore.  Sorry.

Q:  How about art trades?
A:  Not very often.  I got burned by doing too many art trades a long time ago.  It ended up being me doing a lot of work and getting very little in return.  It felt a bit unfair.  I'll only do art trades if I'm not busy and if I feel it will be a fair trade.

Q:  Do you have Kiribans/Contests?
A:  Sometimes!  Any kiribans or contests I have will be announced in my DA journal.  If you have won artwork from me in the past, you cannot play the game(s) again.  Sorry!  I just would like others to have a chance.

Q:  May I draw you fanart/one of your characters?
A:  Sure!  I would be honored!  Please make sure to show it to me if you do draw something!  Thank you!
Although, if you draw a character of mine, please at least mention me with a link back to my page so that people know the character is my creation.  Thank you.  =D

Q:  If I draw you something, will you draw me something?
A:  I have no idea... But you shouldn't draw someone a gift and expect something in return.  I try to show appreciation to anything drawn for me as long as it's for the right reasons.  So, yeah, just because you draw someone something or admire their work does NOT mean they are not obligated to become your best buddy.  I will, of course, appreciate any gift art!

Q:  Can I use your pictures for my website/blog/etc?
A:  No.  Please don't.  Not unless you have special permission from me.

Q:  I saw someone else using/traced/edited one of your images.  What should I do?
A:  Please tell me about it and give me a link to where you saw the image.  I would greatly appreciate it.  Chances are they're not supposed to be using the picture.

Q:  What conventions have you gone to?
A:
-Anime Central 1998 (Looong time ago...) (Illinois)
-Anime Central 2003 (Illinois)
-Animazement 2003 (North Carolina)
-Anime Central 2004 (Illinois)

Q:  What are your next conventions?
A:  I really have no idea.  But check back on my DA journal!  I usually post which convention I'm going to (or will be going to) on here.  I don't really go to conventions much anymore unless they're close by.

Q:  Do you have an instant messaging program?  What's your name?  Can we talk?
A:  I'm kind of a recluse and/or am often busy!  Sorry!  I'm not much for striking up conversations with random people anymore.  I'm old and cranky, so you wouldn't want to talk to me anyway.

...Advice Ramble...

I've actually gotten a few questions from people asking for advice.  Who knew people would ask me!  So here's my ramble on it.

I can't teach people to draw, but I can give suggestions and a little advice.  Draw as often as you can.  I've been drawing ever since I was little and continue to do so.  Taking as many art classes as you can, as well as absorbing as much information as you can is a good thing.

Here's a big one, and my art posted here on DA probably isn't a good example of this: Expand yourself.  Do not draw just one style of work.  If you get wound up in one style and one method, you might get stuck in a rut have some trouble improving.  Try different techniques, different styles and draw different things.  If you want to improve, you gotta work at it.

"How did you learn such good anatomy?" Okay...  So believe it or not, I've gotten this question before, and frankly I think my anatomy could use more work.  It probably always will.  However, to improve on anatomy, I suggest taking a life drawing class or going to nude model sessions and sketching.  Getting a book on anatomy and learning how the body is built is always a good thing.  I'm not much of a book person, but my husband is (he's also an artist & professional animator) and he suggests: 'Human Anatomy for Artists' by Eliot Goldfinger... Or any of Andrew Loomis' books.  I have looked at these books, and they are pretty good.  While I don't use reference for poses for the characters in my drawings... Nude photography can be very helpful in just figure out how the human body bends and moves.

I'm sure I'll add more later, but this is it for now!

:bulletpurple:COMMISSIONS:  Not open.
:bulletblue:TRADES: No thank you.

Have you ever published anything? I see you have characters. I usually just draw my characters from my own novel I've been working on. Also how would you suggest getting noticed and getting a wide rang of viewers??

PS. love your work!
